Diabetes Education

The Diabetes Empowerment Education Program (DEEP) is a six-week workshop to help adults with diabetes learn more about diabetes, self-manage their condition, and maintain a healthy, active lifestyle.

Small groups meet once a week for 2 hours to explore a variety of topics, including:

  • Decreasing diabetes risk factors, such as obesity and hypertension

  • Managing stress and meeting your short- and long-term health goals

  • Managing diabetes with diet and exercise

  • Preventing complications

  • Communicating with medical providers and caregivers

Classes are facilitated by a health educator and open to individuals who are diabetic, pre-diabetic or interested in gaining knowledge about diabetes.

DEEP was developed by the Midwest Latino Health Research Training and Policy Center at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
