Diabetes (DEEP™)

Date/Time: July 1 to August 5, Thursday 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.

The Diabetes Empowerment Education Program (DEEP™) is available to older adults who are living with diabetes or pre-diabetes, caregivers or those interested in its prevention. This 8-week workshop focuses on increasing self-management skills to cope with stress, improve nutrition and physical activity, encourage short and long-term behavioral goals, and decrease diabetes risk factors, including obesity and hypertension, among others. DEEP™ was developed by the Midwest Latino Health Research Training and Policy Center at the University of Illinois at Chicago. El Programa de Empoderamiento y Educación en Diabetes (DEEP™) está disponible para adultos mayores diagnosticados con diabetes, prediabetes, cuidadores o para quien guste de aprender más sobre su prevención. Este taller de 8 semanas se enfoca en auto cuidado, cómo manejar el estrés, mejorar la nutrición y la actividad física, rabajar con metas a corto y largo plazo, disminuir factores de riesgo relacionados con la diabetes, incluyendo obesidad, presión arterial alta, entre otros. Tai Chi for Arthritis

Tai Chi for Arthritis is an effective program for people with arthritis, as it incorporates exercises that improve balance, muscular strength, flexibility, and fitness. The program is based on Sun style Tai Chi, and can be practiced standing or seated. In addition to improving balance, strength, flexibility, and fitness, Tai Chi for Arthritis has been shown to decrease pain, improve brain health, and reduce falls.

Healthier Living (English)

The Healthier Living program focuses on problems older adults with any chronic condition face, and builds self-efficacy while providing tools, non-medical in nature, ranging from setting goals, problem solving, mind-body techniques, better breathing, healthy eating, physical activity, better communication, and the importance of good sleep. Join this 6-week virtual workshop on Chronic Disease Self-Management developed by Stanford University.

El programa “Tomando Control de su Salud” se enfoca en problemas que enfrentan adultos mayores con enfermedades crónicas y ayuda a construir auto-eficiencia al proveer herramientas no médicas, tales como fijarse metas propias, distintas técnicas de cuerpo y mente como respirar mejor, comer saludablemente, tener actividad física, mejorar la comunicación, y la importancia de dormir mejor. Es un taller de 6 semanas desarrollado e implementado por la Universidad de Stanford.

Fall Prevention

Date/Time: Monday and Thursday 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm

The purpose of the Fall Prevention Program is to help seniors develop strength, flexibility, balance and gait to prevent debilitating falls. This virtual educational workshop program is designed especially for individuals who have fallen in the past and helps teach seniors how to stay safe while maintaining an independent lifestyle.

Body Dynamics

Date/Time: Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday 10 am - 11:30 am

Location: Virtual

This class includes moderate to high intensity exercises using weights, resistance tubing, stretching, and balance movements. In the first hour segment, the class will focus on breathing for stress reduction, balance, flexibility, and strength using body weight, hand weights, and/or therabands.

The cardio section is predominant in this class to encourage cardiorespiratory endurance. Once the first hour is complete, there is an optional 30-minutes of class time dedicated to more intense strength and flexibility components. Participants must be able to perform standing exercises for the duration of the class.

Conversation Circle" is a psychoeducational group where we meet via zoom every other week, and share, support each other during this unprecedented time. Chair Yoga

Date/Time: Fridays, 1 pm - 2 pm

This gentle flow of Chair Yoga is designed to improve flexibility, balance, strength, and coordination while boosting your mood, and releasing stress. Chair yoga is done while sitting and some poses can be done standing or on the floor using a chair for support. At the end of this practice you will experience a deep state of relaxation, and connection in between your mind, body in spirit. This practice includes meditation. During the class, many variations of the poses are explained for better comfort and level.
